Tesla FSD v14 May Soon Let Drivers Text While Driving — A Major Shift for Tesla Canada and Future Used Tesla Owners

Tesla FSD v14 May Soon Let Drivers Text While Driving — A Major Shift for Tesla Canada and Future Used Tesla Owners
On November 7, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that one of the most highly requested features for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system is finally on the way. During Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, Musk revealed that the upcoming Tesla FSD v14 update could allow drivers to safely text while the vehicle handles driving duties — something he called the “killer app” of autonomy.
This announcement is especially relevant for current Tesla owners and shoppers looking for a used Tesla in Canada, including popular models like the Used Tesla Model 3 and Used Tesla Model Y, as these updates often extend to previous-generation vehicles.
“We Are Almost Comfortable Letting People Text and Drive,” Musk Says
According to Musk, Tesla’s new FSD v14 software is reaching a level of driving capability where the company is “almost” confident enough to let owners take their hands off their phones — not the steering wheel.
“With version 14, we’re actually getting to the point where we almost feel comfortable allowing people to text and drive, which is kind of the killer app,” Musk said.
He added that Tesla will continue monitoring driver attention through the in-cabin camera, but the system will become more flexible and less strict.
“Right now the car is a little strict about keeping your eyes on the road. But I’m confident that in the next month or two, after reviewing the safety statistics, we will essentially allow texting while driving.”
These improvements reflect Tesla’s broader goal of making FSD safer, more intuitive, and more convenient — something that directly benefits both new Tesla buyers and those shopping for a used Tesla.
A Major Change in Tesla’s Driver-Monitoring Philosophy
One of the biggest challenges Tesla faces as FSD evolves is balancing driver freedom with safety regulations and insurance requirements.
Currently, all Tesla vehicles — including older models often found on the used Tesla Canada market — require:
-
strict eye tracking
-
occasional steering-wheel torque input
-
active driver attention
Musk argued that allowing texting while FSD is active may actually be safer than current behavior.
“Often people will actually turn off FSD to text and then turn it back on, which is less safe,” he said.
In other words, if drivers are already reaching for their phones, Tesla believes the safer approach is to let the car continue driving in autonomous mode instead of switching back to manual control.
Tesla Will Review Safety Data Before Officially Enabling the Feature
Musk emphasized that Tesla will not activate this feature immediately. Instead, the company will first examine real-world performance data from Tesla FSD v14 over the next few months.
If the data supports it, Tesla could become the first automaker in the world to officially permit texting while the vehicle drives itself — a potentially controversial move, given that texting while driving is illegal in most regions.
This decision will likely spark debate among:
-
regulators
-
law enforcement
-
insurance companies
-
road-safety organizations
Still, for Tesla owners and those considering a Used Tesla Model 3 or Used Tesla Model Y, it signals Tesla’s rapid march toward full autonomy.
What This Means for Used Tesla Buyers in Canada
For Canadians shopping for used Teslas, this announcement matters for several reasons:
1. Older Teslas Continue Receiving Major Feature Updates
Tesla is known for pushing major software upgrades even to older vehicles. This includes many Used Tesla Model 3 and Used Tesla Model Y units on the market.
2. Resale Value May Improve
Advanced FSD features — including the potential ability to safely text while driving — can make used Tesla vehicles more appealing, boosting long-term value.
3. Tesla Canada’s FSD Adoption Could Accelerate
As more Canadian drivers experience autonomous features, demand for used Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD may increase.
